Term 1 at SPJCM

Hi..its been quite some time that this blog has been updated..but then here come up the updates on what it is inside of SPJCM..From now on this blog will be updated regularly to give you an insight on life at SPJCM..I started off the program at Singapore..Term 1 mostly went off well with quantitative courses..So for those who have had a stint with statistics and finance previously, this is a better term to score well. And mba is all about balancing your scores..so try and score well in the terms wherein you have an advantage..cos in all probability the other terms will have courses that you aren't familiar with. The curriculum is designed that way precisely so that each student gets an opportunity to lead in certain courses and learn a lot in other courses. Since this is a recap of the experience to make up for the lost updates, these are the courses one takes in term 1.
Financial Accounting : This is a piece of cake for those who have done commerce previously..esp the ones who have taken CA exams etc
Corporate Finance: The backbone of MBA all together..Fortunately the professors here are more than apt to handle the course..be prepared for a lot of case studies and brainstorming with this course..and if in the midst of the course, you have that 'good-for-nothing' feeling..relax..its normal to feel that way when such elite professors open doors that have never been opened before..
Quantitative techniques: A piece of cake for those who have dealt with statistics and statistical tools..esp engineers..:-) Others be aware..this course went as a nightmare to the ones from arts or commerce backgrounds.
Microeconomics: Fantastic course in terms of learning..you will enjoy dealing with the way business functions in terms of economics..
Organizational Behaviour: Ought to be a gr8 learning experience, but our professor messed it up big time!! But if you have the time, it is a worthwhile thing to read up the reference books for this course..It helps you in the later run.
Research Methods: The big Daddy of term1. This course is the culminating course for term1. It is the backbone of our research projects or industry research projects as one would refer it. Fortunately we have good professors for this course, although I regret having the one for RM1.

As for assignments and tests, it starts off as a nightmare and then we get used to it. Sometimes we aren't even bothered if the tests spring up uncalled at all. It is a part of life here and isn't a botheration at all. One really doesn't need to prepare much except that one sticks to honesty while attempting tests and assignments. Plagiarism and copying is an offense that receives the highest degree of penalty here at SPJCM. So better be off without indulging in such stuff.

Extra-curricular activities and student association is comparatively low here..We do have various clubs..the most active amongst all would be the PR Club (public relations)..the PLACOM (placements of course!!)..and faire-la-fete (the cultural and sports club)..of late, we have inaugurated clubs for individual streams as well..Most clubs enrol almost all students between them and make sure that there is enough representation from each student in the batch. If not anything, it'll be as an audience for guest lectures which by the way are a regular at SPJCM.

And as for other aspects of student life..well its quite interesting.. Most of us hang out regularly at nearby restaurants, food courts, pubs (read Clarke :-) ) There's a lot to be explored out here and make sure you experience each one of it..from the pubs to the movies..to the malls..to the food courts..to Sentosa..to bird parks..to night safaris..and the list goes on.

So I guess, most aspects are recapped..I'll be getting in other SPJCMites as well to share reports on life out here..wait and watch!! As for now, I'll leave you with this phrases that best capture what it was in the last 3 months out here.

..story so far.

Amongst all invitation; we chose this one.

Desperate we were to take part in this long run.

With dreams and aspirations; we embarked on a journey,

The next one year of our lives to share with many.

In this time of uncertainty, this decision sounded so prudent.

“Yeah! It’s a good time to get back to being a student.”

And so we rushed for our loans to pay our fee,

Alas, our fate! To bear the brunt of the falling rupee.

Tickets got booked and bags got packed.

Only a last few days with close ones we had.

Finally the day arrived and we took off;

And stepped onto this wonderful Land,

Eager to grow and keen to hold new hand.

Inducted we were and the crowd got split.

Some said, “Shit”; some said, “I love it!”

It took us some time to warm up and finally the ice did break,

Soon we all learnt how to split the cake.

Together we learnt to share and give-n-take,

Together we got things right or committed the same mistake.

The next two months made a quick pass,

With assignments, test or just sleeping in class!

Then came the end-terms; the dreaded one-monster-a-day,

Few embraced it with courage and many kept it at bay.

Whatever be the outcome of those nights awake,

Rewarded we were with a three day break.

And so we set off to the nearby islands to spend our time in craze,

Only to return refilled with energy; cheered enough to enter the next phase.
